During 15th-17th March 2023, the Eco-Club, Govt. Hnahthial College successfully implemented the programme called ‘Nature Camps for Eco-Club Students under the Environmental Education Programme (EEP) 2022-2023 which was organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change & Mizoram Pollution Control Board (State Nodal Agency for SAP).
At noon of 15th March 2025, 50 members of Eco-Club, Govt. Hnahthial College under the guidance of Dr. K. Lalzuimawia, Green Teacher i/c Eco Club, Govt. Hnahthial College left Hnahthial for Darzo Tlang, which was the site chosen for the nature camp.
The party reached Tuipui ‘D’ at around 12:45 p.m. Tuipui ‘D’ is a village on the bank of river Chhimtuipui, which is the largest river in Mizoram. The party stop at the ferry crossing over the Chhimtuipui (Kolodyne) river at Darzo Kai, also known as Tuipui ‘D’ for around two hours to explore local aquatic life. Here, they were guided to watch the magnificent shoal of fish swimming at the fish sanctuary, which is conserved by the local people. The students were also made to enjoy boating and explore on-the-water activities.
After lunch, the party left Tuipui ‘D’ ferry and reached Darzo just before sunset, where we encamped at Darzo Tlang. Located within Hnahthial District in the southern part of Mizoram, Darzo Hill is a hill station with splendid natural beauty.
At night, a meeting was held with the members of Darzo Village Council at VCP’s residence in which the details and purpose of the programme were discussed. In this meeting, the students gained much knowledge on the condition, significance and sustainable utilization of reserved forest resources at Darzo Tlang. A discussion was also made on the necessity of extending systematic efforts towards the conservation of nature and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
On 16th March 2023, in collaboration with the NSS Unit of Govt. Hnahthial College and TKP Ebenezer, Darzo Unit, ‘Cleanliness Drive’ has also been carried out at Pi Sawmi Lungpui Viewpoint at the northern entrance of Darzo. To save nature from deterioration, the participants picked up the garbage, especially littered single use-plastics in the surroundings of the viewpoint.
The next morning i.e. 17th March 2023 the Eco Club members had a sight-seeing where they experienced the natural beauty and richness in biodiversity of Darzo hill station, which provides immense potential for research and eco-tourism. Darzo Tlang is surrounded by dense forests in which a wide variety of flora and fauna is found. Various kinds of trees, bamboo, palms, climbers, wild fruits and birds are found. Moreover, wide varieties of wild animals are also reported to exist in the reserved forests of Darzo Tlang.
As an extension of the ‘Nature Camp’ programme, a one-day ‘Nature Walk’ was carried out at Phawngpui Tlang on 17th March 2023 from the base campsite at Darzo Tlang. Phawngpui Tlang is the highest peak in Mizoram and is one of the 106 existing the only National Parks in Mizoram.
The students were excited to experience the natural magnificence and abundant biodiversity of Phawngpui National Park. By God’s grace, the party safely reached Hnahthial at around 5:00 p.m. on 18th March 2023.
Outcome of the Programme:
1. The Nature Camp at Darzo Tlang and the extended programme called ‘Nature Walk’ at Phawngpui Tlang’ create greater awareness, understanding and empathy of children with and for the environment and the heritages.
2. The programme triggers students’ sensitivity towards appreciation and conservation of nature, which in turn is expected to have positive environmental actions at different levels.
3. The programme sensitizes the students and local community towards the sustainable development goals for peace, prosperity and progress of mankind.
In the name of Eco Club, Govt. Hnahthial College, I whole-heartedly thanks the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change & Mizoram Pollution Control Board (State Nodal Agency for SAP) for organising such a valuable programme for the Eco Club students.
